Summer Reading Fun
Long Summer days getting you a little restless? Tired of the summer reruns on the television? Long before computers, ipads, and televisions the primary form of entertainment came about through books! So this summer, when you find yourself lounging around, why don’t you pick up one of these suggestions from your local library or bookstore. Here is our team’s list for top 5 summer readings… Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens – This novel combines a rollicking, biting sense of humor with nuanced psychological insights that feel surprisingly modern in their attitudes toward women. The title itself is an ironic joke: Successful businessman Paul Dombey neglects and mistreats his daughter, Florence, the true "son" of the title, until both his business and their relationship are nearly ruined. East of Eden by John Steinbeck - The novel highlights the conflicts of two generations of brothers; the first being the kind, gentle Adam Trask and his wild brother Charles. Adam eventually marries Cathy Ames, an evil, manipulative, and beautiful prostitute; she betrays him, joining Charles on the very night of their wedding. Later, after giving birth to twin boys, she shoots Adam and leaves him to return to her former profession. In the shadow of this heritage Adam raises their sons. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - The novel begins in the shire, as Frodo Baggins inherits the Ring from Bilbo. Both are unaware of its origin, but Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, learns of the Ring's history and advises Frodo to take it away from the Shire. Frodo leaves, taking his gardener and friend, Samwise Gamgee, and two cousins, Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, as companions. After leaving the Forest, they stop in the town of Bree, where they meet Aragorn, Isildur's heir, who joins them as guide and protector. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho –Details the journey of a young Spanish shepherd named Santiago. Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream. Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. Kings of the Earth by Jon Clinch - Three elderly, semiliterate brothers live in squalor on a ramshackle dairy farm in central New York. They barely wash, their coveralls are splattered in cow manure, and their tiny house is a fetid mess. Strangest of all, they share a bed—and on a summer night one dies from what the local medical examiner calls strangulation. We would love to hear from you, please send in your reviews!
